WhatsApp marketing for lead generation: the setup behind 2,489 booking leads

How click-to-WhatsApp ads, simple automation and fast replies scaled one tour operator's monthly leads 14 times, and how to do it without getting banned.

I hold a WhatsApp API certification from Wati, and I have used WhatsApp for travel, moving and healthcare clients. For businesses that sell through conversation, it often beats a form.

Why WhatsApp works

A form asks people to commit before they have their answers. A chat lets them ask first. There is a practical benefit too: when a chat begins, you already have a working number, and you can follow up in the app they use every day.

The basic setup

  1. Ad: a Meta campaign with WhatsApp as the destination and a useful pre-filled message.
  2. First reply: sent automatically within seconds, with a greeting and a question.
  3. Qualifying: two or three short questions, such as dates, city and group size.
  4. Hand-over: a person takes over as soon as the lead is serious.
  5. Tracking: each stage is labelled, and those results feed back to Meta.

What it did for a tour operator

Pudugai Sai Yatra sells pilgrimage and group tours in South India. Across 20+ campaigns we produced 2,489 WhatsApp booking leads, and monthly volume grew 14 times. Each trip had its own campaign, so we could stop one as soon as seats filled. See travel and tourism marketing.

Rules that protect your number

  • Message only people who have agreed to hear from you.
  • Never use bought lists or unofficial bulk-sending tools.
  • Always make it easy to opt out.
  • Send fewer, more useful messages.

Where it goes wrong

The usual failure is not the ad but the reply. If a chat sits unanswered for hours, the lead moves on, as I show in why leads go cold. Plan for who answers during evenings and weekends, because that is when people often message.

Other common problems are too many questions at the start, and a reply bot that cannot hand over to a person.

Which businesses suit it?

It suits travel, healthcare, education, moving, home services and most businesses with questions before a sale. It is less useful for simple, low-priced items people buy straight away. See my WhatsApp marketing service.

Frequently asked

Is WhatsApp marketing legal?

Yes, when people have opted in and you follow WhatsApp's policies and local privacy law. Use the official Business Platform for campaigns.

Do click-to-WhatsApp ads work outside India?

Yes, especially in markets where WhatsApp is a daily habit, such as the UAE. They can be less useful in the US, where many people prefer SMS and calls, so test before scaling.

How quickly should I reply to WhatsApp leads?

An automated first reply should be instant, and a person should follow up as soon as possible, ideally within minutes during working hours.
