How to use this meta tag generator
- Enter your page title, description and URL.
- Add your site name, share image and any other details.
- Check the previews, then copy the tags into your page's head section.
Who it is for
For developers and site owners setting up a new page, particularly on hand-coded or custom sites without an SEO plugin.
The three that matter most
- Title. The single most important tag on the page. Around 60 characters before Google cuts it. Put the thing people search for near the front.
- Description. Not a ranking factor, but it is your advert in the results. Around 155 characters. Write it to earn the click, not to please a crawler.
- Share image. The one everybody forgets. Without
og:image, your link shows up in WhatsApp and LinkedIn as a bare grey box, and nobody clicks a grey box.
Open Graph is not just Facebook
The name is misleading. Open Graph tags are what WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, Telegram and iMessage all read to build a link preview. One set of tags covers all of them.
1200 × 630 pixels is the size to use. Smaller images get cropped or shown as a thumbnail.
Canonical, in one sentence
It tells search engines which URL is the real one when the same page can be reached several ways — with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters on the end, or through a category path. Without it, your own pages compete with each other.
When to use noindex
Thank-you pages, internal search results, staging sites, and anything behind a login. These pages have no business in search, and letting them in dilutes what Google thinks your site is about.
Never put noindex on a page you want found. It sounds obvious. It is also one of the most common ways a site quietly disappears after a redesign.
Common questions
What meta tags do I need for SEO?
Start with a title, a meta description, a viewport tag and a canonical link. Add Open Graph tags so that the page shares well on social media and messaging apps.
How long should my title be?
Aim for 50 to 60 characters. Google measures pixels rather than characters, so a title full of wide letters can be cut sooner. The counter above uses 60 as a safe limit.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
No. It affects clicks, which is arguably more useful. Google also rewrites descriptions about half the time when it thinks something on the page fits the query better.
Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?
X falls back to Open Graph if Twitter tags are missing, so strictly no. Including both gives you control over how it looks on X specifically, and costs four lines.
Where do these tags go?
Inside the
element. If your site already outputs a title or description, remove the old one — two of either is worse than none.Need more customers as well?
